To help America in the war, usage of raw materials and textiles in non-war products became restricted. This also included silk and nylon. Therefore stockings became rare and very hard to find, women would seek new methods to simulate the look of stockings. They started using leg makeup in a slightly darker tone from cosmetic companies like Max Factor. On the back of their leg, they would use eyeliner or an eyebrow pencil, to draw the usual seam up the back. This would from far give the illusion of actual stockings. They were called "liquid stockings". These liquid stockings would last three days, if the woman didn't bathe. If women crossed their legs or it rained this would be endangered.
Dresses and suits became slimmer with only just enough fabric to be able to walk or sit. Dresses and skirts would be about knee length and sometimes a tad longer. |

For the younger women attending college, it became popular to wear sportswear. This sportwear would for example be cotton shorts or playsuits, in case it was nice weather.
For hair and makeup, women would start keeping their hair longer. Because of work they were advised to keep it a bit shorter though. Red lipstick was very popular as well as red nailpolish. Eyeliner was always black. |
